LSO Discovery Panufnik Young Composers Scheme 2010 - Update!
15/02/10
I am very excited to have been selected to take part in the 2010 LSO Panufnik Young Composers Scheme. Last weekend, the introductory sessions took place, where I met up with the LSO Discovery team, the project champion Lady Panufnik, various LSO players, five other composers who are taking part in the scheme this year and James MacMillan who is the guest Composition Director. The weekend was incredibly inspiring, and I came away with so many ideas for the piece I will be writing - almost certainly way too many for such a short piece (we have been given a length of 3 minutes!).
My first thought, when asked to write such a short piece, was the link between such a piece and the Haiku in poetry. However, after researching the background and structure of Haiku, and reading many of these poems, it became clear that what I am interested in is simply the ‘essence’ of the world of the Haiku. I won't be basing my piece around one particular Haiku and I don’t want to recreate a Haiku poem in music. In particular, I don’t want to attempt to make the piece sound Japanese in any way! Instead, I plan to take certain structural ideas, and other specific ideas related to the thinking behind the Haiku form, and bring them into my own musical world.
I will be blogging about my experiences via the LSO Discovery website - more to follow shortly.
