Programme Notes

The instrumentation of Returning (clarinet in Bb, bassoon, horn, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass) suggested to me a rather dark, contemplative sound world. The theme of darkness (or returning to darkness, hence the title) is central to the work and forms the basis for one of the main musical ideas. This idea is a series of chords, first heard after the short declamatory introduction, which then reappear throughout the piece in various guises. This ‘ritornello’ element forms the basis for the structure of the work.
Aside from this, there are two other distinct ideas. The first, restless and lyrical, is initially heard as a dialogue between the clarinet and viola. The second, featuring a repeating three note horn figure, is based upon constantly altering and changing repeating patterns. However, as the piece progresses, the distinction between the two ideas becomes blurred, with constant development and overlapping of ideas.
In terms of musical material the piece is very concise, all the material being drawn from the introductory three bars.
Each instrument has an equal role during the piece and I aimed to explore the character and personality of each instrument.
